My Projects

Here is the personal essay that I wrote that got me accepted in University of California, Santa Cruz.

One of the graduation requirements for a Physics major is to do a senior thesis project. It could either be theoratical or experimental. My senior thesis was on long term testing testing of NASA's upcoming Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope's (GLAST) silicon strip detectors. What exactly did it entail, you ask. Find out right here.

I was the student body president during my last year at Chabot College. As part of my campaign, I promised to write a weekly column in the Chabot College's newspaper informing students of the student government, our activities and other things that might be of interest to the students. You can find the articles that I wrote by clicking here.

Junior colleges are a wonderful place. While I was going to Chabot College in Hayward, I was able to take a whole variety of classes that I would not have been able to if I had gone straight to the university. One class that I took there was Photography. I had one of the two best instructors there are. My introductory class was with Kate Jordahl and advanced black and white with Geir Jordahl. They are renowned photographers and you can see some of their work at their website. I like black and white photography best; I have not tried color photography yet but I am familiar with it and it does not seem as attractive as black and white. These are just a sample of all the work I did while taking the classes and while doing some independent stuff.
Some of the pictures have been cropped and formatted to look better on a computer screen. They still don't look as good as the real thing. I welcome your comments about the pictures. For some reason, they look worse on Macs. If anyone has a solution, please let me know.

In 1916, when Albert Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity, he made some bold predictions about the nature of the universe. The curvature of space-time and the existence of black holes have been two of the most convincing discoveries in favor of Einstein’s theory. Yet, the theory is being put to test to this day, since until every aspect, every prediction made by the theory is confirmed it cannot be considered complete and therefore valid. Gravitational waves are one of the first predictions of Einstein’s theory but the most difficult one to validate. As elusive as they are, the detection of gravitational waves will be the most convincing confirmation of Einstein’s theory to date. So begins my essay that I wrote for an Astronomy class that I took at University of California, Santa Cruz.

There has been a great debate on the origin of life on planet Earth. It is now believed that most of the water that we see around us was brought to Earth by comets. Not only that, comets may have also brought organic molecules from which life evolved since these molecules would not be present in the early hot Earth. Life in the Universe is an Astronomy class I took at UCSC where we discussed this and other such possibilities. Comets and Habitability is a paper I wrote on history of comets, their formation, the possibility of comets bringing the ingredients of life to Earth and possibility of life on comets among other things.

This is a essay I wrote for a scholarship application. I do not remember what the topic was but it must have been something like "What got you interested in conservation?" I am not sure there was an exact moment that made me into a "tree-hugger." It was mostly like a gradual process as you will see when you read the short essay.
